When stress starts getting to them, people have different ways to cope: some chose retail therapy, some will got for a long day of pampering at the spa, others will splurge on a nice meal. Some might even go for all the above.
I used to be like that but, since I started on my frugal journey, I have found a cheaper (read: free), and in fact, more satisfying way.
Last Sunday I had my day all planned out.
I had taken the day of work because I was expecting four new students from all over the world and I didn’t know what time they would be here. I knew I’d have to be home all day so I had booked someone to sort out my garden and I thought that, except for making him a few cups of tea, I would enjoy a day of relaxation catching up on a few blogs and looking up some recipes. Maybe even baking a cake if I could be bothered.
Things did not go according to plan.
The gardener turned up and did a splendid job but, by lunchtime, I had a phone call from the school saying that no student would be coming for another week! To say I was not pleased would be the understatement of the year!
When something annoys me I can either sit there and get more and more irritated by the minute or I can channel that negative energy by doing something physical.
I chose option B.
I went through the two cupboards of doom and pulled everything out. These last few months I had been going through the “wash / dry / chuck-in-a-pile and close the door” routine and opening the door to find stuff to wear had become a safety issue.
So I went through everything. I re-washed everything that had fallen on the floor, discarded the unwearable, put the stuff I will never get into again in a bag to be taken to the charity shop, and neatly folded and put away the rest.
By the time I finished I was exhausted but a lot more relaxed. I still have to do the other cupboard but I’ll do it on Wednesday as I have the day off.
The cake did not get made.
